STRESS RELATED DISORDERS
These are classified as:
1. Acute Stress Reaction: This is a transient disorder of intense severity which develops immediately or within minutes of a stress event in an otherwise healthy person. The main symptoms anxiety or depression or both. After an initial phase other symptoms appear like sweating, palpitations, tremors, depression, restlessness, insomnia etc… none of which may last long but fluctuate constantly. The person may withdraw or show anger or histrionic behaviour.The person avoids thinking about the event or being reminded about it. He may deny that such an event has ever happened.
2. Post Traumatic Disorder: If the acute stress is not resolved successfully it may lead to the development of a past – traumatic disorder which may have its onset soon after the stressful event or within days or a few months. The symptoms relates to hyper-arousal (anxiety, irritability), intrusions (distressing, flashbacks, nightmares) and avoidance (benumbed feelings and emotional detachment, avoiding references to the event).
3. Adjustment Disorders: These arise during the periods of adaptation to a significant life change or consequent to a stressful life event. The onset is usually within a month of the event and may last for several months. The symptoms vary predominant anxiety and depression or at times other emotions like anger and irritability.
