Major Categories according to DSM -IV



The two prevalent systems of classification are the international classification of diseases (ICD) produced by WHO and the Diagnostic and statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.

Major Categories according to DSM -IV:

1.       Disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood and adolescence.
2.       Delirium, dementia and Amnestic and other cognitive disorders.
3.       Mental disorders due to general medical condition not elsewhere classified.
4.       Substance - related disorders.
5.       Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
6.       Mood disorders.
7.       Anxiety disorders.
8.        Somatoform disorders.
9.       Factitious disorders.
10.   Dissociative disorders.
11.   Sexual and gender identity disorders
12.   Eating disorders
13.   Sleep disorders
14.   Impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified.


Multi Axial Evaluation
Axis I:           General Psychiatric Syndromes
Axis II:          Personality disorder and mental retardation.
Axis III:        Physical Disorders and general medical conditions.
Axis IV:        Psychological and Environmental problems affecting the disorder.
Axis V:          Global Assessment Functioning (GAF) (Patient’s general level of functioning)
