SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDERS

SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDERS

These are episodic disorders in which there are concurrent schizophrenic and affective symptoms and where diagnosis of either one or the other alone cannot be made.  Delusions and hallucinations, passivity feelings, catatonic symptoms or negative symptoms of schizophrenia are accompanied simultaneously or within a few days by symptoms of depression like sad mood, retardation guilt feelings or hopelessness.  The symptoms may be of mania or are mixed with symptoms of both depression and mania.  One episode may last for several months and the period between two episodes may last for several months and the period between two episodes is symptom free.
