What holding us back

WHAT IS HOLDING US BACK?

1.      Unwillingness to take risks
Successful people never hesitate to take risks. They move forward all the time. Success involves taking calculated risks. A person who is trained in mountain climbing, the risk is relatively less. But for a person not having the training it is very risky. Risk is dependent upon the person who is taking the risk. Responsible risk taking is based on knowledge, training and careful study and competence- factors that give you the courage to act while the facing difficulties. Not making the attempt is often a bigger mistake than making the attempt and failing.
2.     Lack of persistence
Persistence represents a strong will. Persist in what must be done and resist what ought not to be done, these are two points of success. Never think that you are a loser and cannot move forward. If you are having a willing mind to fight and move forward you will reach your goal. You need to show persistence.
3.     Instant gratification
In the present era we get everything instantly. We do not have the time to wait. Remember when going in for instant gratification we tend not to think about consequences, and only think about momentary pleasures. When you think short term, it is limited vision. With limited vision you cannot see worthwhile goals. Think about long term goals and do things for attaining the goals.
4.     Lack of priorities
When we don’t have our priorities right, we waste time, not realizing the time wasted is a life wasted. One of the keys to success is to understand your priorities and set your priorities before applying them.
5.     Looking for short cuts
Many times in life we are looking for the easier way, which really ends up being tougher. The problem with people today is that they want instant answers. People are looking for a one minute solution.  Looking for short cuts leads to disappointment.
6.     Selfishness and Greed
Needs can be satisfied, but greed cannot. It is a cancer of the soul. Greed destroys relationships. Greed comes out of poor self esteem, which manifests itself as false pride.
7.      Lack of conviction
People who lack conviction take the middle of the road. People without conviction do not take a stand. One of the important secrets to success is, instead of being against something, be for something. That way, you become part of the solution. Henry Ford said “if you think you can or if you think you can’t, you are right”. The main point is overcoming obstacles will restore our faith. In this world three kinds of people are there:
a.      people who make things happen
b.      people who watch things happen
c.       people who wonder what happened
8.     Lack of  understanding of Nature’s laws
Success is not a matter of luck. It is a matter of work, dedication and curiosity to know what is happening? Robert Frost wrote “how many times it thundered before Franklin took the hint! How many apples fell on Newton’s head before he took the hint! Nature is always hinting at us. It hints over and over again. And suddenly we take the hint.”
We are either moving forward or backward. We are either creating or disintegrating. We must accept changes, it is inevitable. We need to know Every progress is change, but change is not progress”. Evaluate the changes that happened and accept it only if it makes sense. Change in order to be meaningful must be positive. Every change comes from our thoughts and these needs to be fulfilled by our actions and beliefs.
9.     Unwillingness to Plan and Prepare
Preparation before acting gives confidence which comes from proper planning and practice. Preparation is inevitable in our daily life. Complete mental and physical preparation is the result of sacrifice and self discipline. “Everyone has a will to win but very few have the will to prepare to win”. Preparation means learning from mistakes. A person, who makes a mistake and doesn’t correct it, commits a bigger one. If we are not prepared, the pressure will come and make the situation difficult. So there is no substitute for preparation and planning.
10. Rationalizing
Reasons and results are the two things which determine whether a person is successful or not. Winners may analyze but they never rationalize - that is a loser’s game. They take everything as a learning situation and take the lessons and practice for the future. Successful people don’t rationalize. Good advice for failure is, “Don’t think, don’t ask and don’t listen. Just rationalize”.
11.   Not learning from past mistakes
Everywhere we have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes, which is the right attitude. Failure is a detour, not a dead end. It is a delay, not defeat. Our lives are not only to learn from our own mistakes, but we need to learn from other’s mistakes also. Keep this in mind “while one person hesitates because he feels inferior, the other is busy making mistakes and becoming superior”.
12.  Inability to recognize opportunity
Remember, the bigger the obstacle, the better the opportunity. So go ahead.
13.  FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real).
Fear comes from a lack of understanding. To live in fear means to live in an emotional prison. Fear destroys our potential and ability. It ruins our relationship and health. It is better to die on one’s feet than live with fear on one’s knees.
14. Inability to use talent
According to William James, human beings use only 10-12% of their potential. The saddest words in life are ‘I should have’. Some say that they are taking rest and become idle. Their abilities are not for anything. Whatever may be the situation we have to use our talents and abilities.
15.  Lack of Discipline
Think about athletes, they are the pretty examples of discipline. This discipline takes self-control, sacrifice and avoiding distractions and temptations, and means staying focused. Tim Connor said that “you have a choice in a life: you can either pay the price of discipline or regret”.
16. Poor self esteem
Poor self esteem is lack of self-respect and self-worth. People with low self esteem are constantly looking for identity. They are trying to find out about themselves. One’s self is not to be found, but to be created. We can say that idleness and laziness are consequences of poor self esteem and so is making excuses. Idleness is very dangerous; it is like rust that eats into the most brilliant metal.
17.  Lack of knowledge
The first step towards knowledge is awareness of areas of ignorance. Will Durant says “education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance”.
18. Fatalistic attitude
A fatalistic attitude prevents people from accepting responsibility for their circumstances. These type of people wait for things to happen rather than making them happen. If you want success, believe in the principle of cause and effect, and you will create your own ‘luck’. As Samuel Goldwyn said, “the harder I work, the luckier I get”. Life without vision, courage and depth is simply a blind experience. Small, lazy and weak minds always take the easiest way, the path of least resistance.
“Attempting half heartedly is like expecting failure and achieving it”. Luck only favors those who help themselves. The only way to overcome a fatalistic attitude is to accept responsibility. It takes preparation planning and action.
19. Lack of purpose
Remember this “great minds have purposes, others have wishes”.  When people lack purpose and direction, they see failures everywhere. If a person has the desire to achieve goals, know the direction to move. He has the dedication to stay focused and work hard. He become successful in life, other still remains the same.
20.            Lack of courage
Courage and character are the critical combination of success. Successful people do not look for miracles. They take advantage of obstacles and grow. When our mind is filled with courage we forget our fears and overcome obstacles.
“Success is only in the hands of a person who is going behind that”
