Anxious Personality Disorder
People with an anxious (avoidant) personality disorder are shy and socially inhibited. They have a low self esteem and think that they are inferior to others. They long for social relationships but avoid them for fear of criticism from others. They are hypersensitive to negative evaluation by others and are therefore reluctant to take risks or to engage in new activities. In social situations, they feel embarrassed and behave in an awkward manner. They function adequately in their jobs but are afraid of challenges for fear of inviting criticisms. This disorder is to be differentiated from social phobias, panic disorder and schizoid personality disorder. In anxious personality disorder the individual entertains social interactions but is afraid to interact for fear of rebuffs.
